The faces behind Access Lodge!
Phil and I have been together since 1996 and married in 2007.
Although Phil’s background is in the decorating trade, I went into the care sector working for the NHS looking after adults with disabilities and challenging behaviour. I then went onto the private sector working in a children’s home, then eventually went to work in a Special School for children with physical and medical needs.
While working at the school, I started doing respite care for children with disabilities at weekends and during school holidays and now these children have become young adults and are still part of our family 19 years later! Phil has also been by my side every step of the way embracing each young person I care for.
We have adapted our own home to accommodate our extended family with a ceiling track hoist, ramp and open spaces as these things make it so much easier and more comfortable for the young person staying. I then had the idea of having a holiday place as I found it more difficult to take the young people away overnight as they got older and bigger. So when I wanted to buy somewhere to help with holidays, Phil didn’t batter an eye! It took a couple of years to find a place we thought would work and within budget. We purchased the lodge, and between us, worked every spare weekend for a year adapting it, and this is the result!!
I decided to leave the school so I can concentrate on Access Lodge as well as continue to offer respite for the young people who have become part of our family.
I will meet you on your first day to hand over the keys and show you around and I have met some lovely guests through renting it out, and continue to meet many new families. I have listened to previous guests about any changes that need doing or any further equipment that may be of some use next time, or for someone else that may benefit from, I seem to see something every time I go out! From a new DVD or game to a coffee machine!! the list as they say, is never ending!!!....
Thank you to all those who have stayed at Access Lodge, returned to Access Lodge, and are booked to stay for the first time. I hope you find the place with everything you need for an enjoyable stay.
